Nine needy individuals underwent cataract surgery at Hibiscus Private Hospital in Port Shepstone on Friday.

These operations were made possible thanks to a wonderful and ongoing annual partnership between the Port Shepstone Lions, Ophthalmologist Dr Trevor Stein, Hibiscus Private Hospital, anaesthesiologists Drs Louw and Basson and Oculate.

The Port Shepstone Lions provided funding. Dr Trevor Stein performed the surgeries at no charge. HPH provided the nursing staff and hospital beds at no charge.

Anaesthetists Drs Louw and Basson also provided their services for free, the lenses and viscoelastic were sponsored by Oculate and the Covid-19 testing was sponsored by Ampath.

Shelly Beach SpecSavers will be sponsoring reading glasses for all the patients. We would also like to thank Lion Lady Anna Compion for coordinating the project on behalf of the club.

Sheppie Lions Club President Mike Heathcote, Club PRO Denis Meyer and Lion Lady Anna Compion visited some of the patients at Hibiscus Day Hospital prior to their surgeries and were overwhelmed by the gratitude shown by these patients, many of whom have been severely sight-impaired for many years.
