A quartet of South Coast karateka have been selected to represent South Africa at the IKO Matsushima Kyokushin Karate World Cup in China next month.
IKO Matsushima Lower South Coast stars Sifiso Hhlumayo, Nonkululeko Bhengu, Thabiso Sigwebela and Mpendulo Jili are set to fly the flag in the global showpiece in Shanghai from 17-18 November after impressing selectors in Umlazi recently.
They will be accompanied by Sensei Dr Sipho Nzimande, head of the IKO Matsushima Lower South Coast region.
In order to realise this dream, the team have to raise an exorbitant amount for national colours, Visas, flights, accommodation and other expenses, and are appealing to businesses and community members for donations.
In Nzimande the team have a highly respected Sensei and karate pioneer, who has been instrumental in unearthing and developing karate on the South Coast since the early 1970s.
The former principal of Esayidi TVET College used karate to help teach youth discipline, leadership, self-esteem and sportsmanship throughout his years at the helm, and continues his mentorship role at his dojo.
The China-bound team are hard at work training for the World Cup and would appreciate any support.
For donations or more information, contact Nzimande on 082 775 6834 or Shihan Mvaxa Mncedisi on 078 397 4279.
