Suid-Natal Martial Arts Academy stars Tyler Hogan and Wian de Beer excelled at the Arnold Classic Africa, which was held at the Sandton Convention Centre recently.
The sport and fitness extravaganza returned to South Africa for the third time and while bodybuilding and power sports were at the heart of the event – given co-founder Arnold Schwarzenegger’s passion and lifetime commitment recognised through titles such as Mr Universe – a multitude of sports formed part of the festival.
Athletes across sports codes, from archery and arm wrestling, to underwater hockey, Zumba and karate competed in the African showcase.
Karate South Africa (KSA) had hosted a ranking league for selection into the KSA national squad to represent the country in international competitions like these.
Sports Karate was one of the codes in which KSA held a ranking tournament, inviting only the top ten athletes in the country.
The KSA Arnold Classic Africa Karate Championship featured over 400 top ten ranked competitors in the country, and also attracted international teams from African countries such as Congo and Mauritius.
Local duo Hogan and De Beer showed they’re two of the best karateka on the continent, with Hogan winning gold for kata in the 14/15 year division and De Beer bagging silver for kumite in the 10/11 year under 45kg category.
Suid-Natal Martial Arts Academy Sensei Coenie Vrey said, “We’re proud that we had two top ten athletes in the country invited to compete at the event. The tournament was very tough and the level of competition was extremely high. Congratulations to Tyler and Wian.”
