The winners of the South Coast Fever MTB and Trail Run Series were crowned after a fantastic day of racing at Lake Eland Game Reserve on Sunday.
After the results of the day’s Lake Eland Classic, the fourth and final round of the series, were confirmed, ROAG could update the final seriesstandings for the prize-giving scheduled for 2.30pm at the hall of the Lake Eland Game Reserve.
Lots of planning went into the auspicious occasion. The series logo was sent to Cape Town months ago and a special 3D casting was made so that a very special, one of a kind medal could be casted for this occasion.
The gold medal was 18ct gold plated, the silver medal was sterling blast and the bronze was real bronze. Special ribbons were printed for every medal.
The coveted trophies were for the overall male and female mountain bike winners and they were one of a kind, specially made, glass teardrop displaying the series logo and overall category winner as well as the bragging rights for the 2019 season and until the new champions will be crowned at the end of 2020.
Other prizes for the overall winners included a life size cheque with the winner’s prize money of R5000 each on it, as well as a gold medal and a bouquet of flowers sponsored by Take Heart events.
Machdeline van der Merwe from Take Heart controlled all the prize-giving arrangements on behalf of One Way Productions, flowers, decor and hosting. Marno Bester got the ceremony underway as MC by welcoming everyone and also introducing the VIPs attending, such as Andrew Ramos, as well as making the official apologies of the sponsors that couldn’t make the ceremony due to other commitments.
They were the editor in chief of South Coast Fever, Nazreen Rasool, the Head of publishing at South Coast Fever, Marcus Govender, Allan Hall, the CEO of Hibiscus Insurance as well as the new CEO of UGU South Coast Tourism, Phelisa Mangcu.
He then tanked all the sponsors for their loyal support of the series and read their speeches to the audience. Then finally the moment arrived. First up was the special limited edition shirts for all the participants that entered all four races before the first race got underway.
Then it was the medal ceremony that started with the category winners in the 25km distance that finally lead up to the highlight in the 45km distance, which was the overall male and female champions for 2019.
The honours for the men went to Andrew Hill and Brennan Anderson as co-winners and Hayley Smith as ladies winner and champion for 2019. Unfortunately, due to health reasons, Smith couldn’t be present at prize-giving but was called and congratulated by the organisers. This year also saw the crowning of new 25km champions, Tayne Rudling and Riley Smith.
“Congratulations to all the overall series and category winners for 2019. It took lots of hard work and dedication to end up on top,” said series organiser Michael Bester from One Way Productions.
Bester said it was the perfect way to wrap up the series.
“After all the excitement of announcing the winners, delicious snacks and drinks were served and everybody mingled and reminisced about the year and the four races that made this year the most exciting series to date.
“It was a great way to bring the curtain down on 2019 and we all look forward to 2020! A huge thank you to all the series sponsors, who have all confirmed that they will be onboard again next year for the fifth birthday edition of the fast-growing and very popular South Coast Fever MTB and Trail Run Series.”
UGU South Coast Tourism CEO, Mangcu, commended the organisers for another fantastic event: “This is now the fourth year of The South Coast Fever MTB and Trail Run Series and it continues to be one of the region’s biggest tourism drawcards. Our incredibly diverse terrain, beautiful climate and welcoming communities will undoubtedly see this event attract even more visitors in the years to come.”
