The inaugural Ugu South Coast Seniors National Open Tennis Tournament was held at Umtentweni and Uvongo tennis clubs last week.

A number of KwaZulu-Natal players impressed, none more so than the six standouts who won their respective divisions.

Martin Meyer ruled the roost in the men’s singles over-35 division, Neville Wright won the men’s singles over-60 division and Gulio Salottolo secured the men’s singles over-75 spoils.

In the doubles, meanwhile, Sally Yatt and her Gauteng East partner Karen Steenkamp took top honours in the ladies over-40 division, Brad Elliott and his Gauteng East partner Mark Joubert reigned in the men’s over-50 division and Jeannette Robert and her Gauteng North partner Annemarie Wege won the ladies over-60 division.

“With an entry of 75 players, the tournament was a rousing success,” said Ian Ackerman, president of the Ugu Tennis Association.

“Many thanks go to all the organisers for their hard work and commitment in making this tournament so successful. This will be an annual event and it is hoped to attract more entrants next year.

“Ranking points are played for and the best players will be in the running to be chosen to represent South Africa in various international event,” he added.
