Wade Young (Sherco) was at his brilliant best as he bagged a major win in the Extreme XL Lagares at the weekend.
The Paddock superstar had his work cut out for him in the Portuguese hard enduro, most notably in the form of two-time defending champion Alfredo Gomez and his KTM team mate Jonny Walker.
Gomez won Saturday’s prologue in Porto and the evening endurocross race in Lagares to put himself in prime position to pull off a hat-trick.
Young, however, came through when it mattered most, showing his ever-evolving skillset to take the win in the five-hour main race.
“An amazing feeling,” Young told enduro21.com after the gruelling race. “It was brutal out there, easily one of the most difficult courses so to pull off the win, considering I’m not a true trials specialist, is pretty special.”
He later added on social media: “Making dreams into reality. Couldn’t be more happier to win #xllagares, against the best in the business. Thanks to my team for making it happen and to the best mechanic.”
With the win, Young will enter the Erzbergrodeo high on momentum and will be one of the favourites to take the title when the race goes down on June 15-18.
