Sixty-year-old Marie Swanepoel, mother of Tessa Beetge who is in a Brazilian jail because of drug trafficking, has died in East London.  Swanepoel was rushed to hospital earlier in the week after suffering from a bleeding ulcer and organ failure. She lapsed into a coma from which she did not recover. Swanepoel moved to Queenstown from Margate recently.

Marie Swanepoel will be remembered for her unrelenting efforts to see former Hibiscus Coast Health Director Cheryl Cwele and accomplice Frank Nabolisa sentenced on charges of drug trafficking.   Thirty-six-year-old Tessa was an unwitting drug mule for the two, and was arrested in Sao Paolo in 2008 with cocaine in her possession. She has been in prison ever since, and still has three years of her sentence to serve.  A fund was started recently to help with Mrs. Swanepoel’s medical expenses.  Anybody wanting to make a contribution can get the account number from geojen@netcomsa.net
