WELCOME REMARKS BY THE MAYOR CLR NCP MQWEBU AT THE MEDIA LAUNCH OF THE SA WOMENS OPEN 2014, SAN LAMEER GOLF CLUB

09 September 2014

Good afternoon

On behalf of Hibiscus Coast municipality we are really excited that one of the premier events on our calendar, the Womens Open, is around the corner. We feel extremely proud that we have been associated with this tournament since its return three years ago, and have since witnessed its growth year in year out.

From what we can see this year promises to bring even greater excitement. The tournament has a new home in San Lameer Golf Club; we are happy to note that the facility has undergone renovations in preparation for the torrent of golfers and visitors who will descend upon us in October. Your commitment to world class service can only be commended.

We also welcome the entrance of Cell C to the growing family of sponsors and associates. Your participation is a clear endorsement of the value of this tournament to women’s sport in general and women in golf in particular.

We are pleased that there is a strong South African contingent in the field of players taking part this year; it reinforces our belief that we are indeed a great sporting nation. We are confident that they will surely give the winner of last year’s event a run for her money in her quest to defend her title.

What we appreciate even more is the fact that Lesley and her team, in characteristic woman trail-blazing style, have introduced an exciting innovation this year in the form of a Champions Dinner, which will celebrate women achievement from sports, business and government.

We fully agree with you that there are not enough platforms which celebrate women who have achieved greatness. By launching this platform you are not only narrowing the gap between men and women, but you are challenging and motivating other women to acknowledge their own greatness and that of their fellow womenfolk. Congratulations.

As the government of the people of Hibiscus Coast, we are humbled by the support and enthusiasm which this tournament has generated. Together with the Provincial Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, we will continue to do more to unleash the development of sports as a tourist niche.

With those words Program Director I wish to welcome everyone to the beautiful Hibiscus Coast, and wish this tournament great success.

I thank you
