MEDIA STATEMENT BY HIBISCUS COAST MUNICIPALITY:
HCM GAINS ANOTHER BLUE FLAG BEACH
At the national awards held in Knysna earlier this month, the Hibiscus Coast municipality was awarded a total of six Blue Flag beaches for the year 2014-2015, to commence on 01 November 2014.
This is an increase from the five that were awarded in the current financial year. According to the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Arica (WESSA), this status is a voluntary, eco-label that is recognized as a trusted symbol of quality.
The Municipal Manager, Mr Maxwell Mbili has attributed this achievement to hard work and cooperation with all stakeholders. “As a choice tourist destination of many local and international visitors, it is important to us to ensure that visitors to our beaches can enjoy our facilities in the comfortable knowledge that they are assured of its safety and water quality”; he said.
The Mpenjati beach was awarded pilot status, which means that in the coming year it will have to meet all Blue Flag criteria before it can be awarded full status.
