STATEMENT FROM UGU DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY LATE THURSDAY AFTERNOON 14/11

Please be advised of the current status on three supply water schemes under Ray Nkonyeni and Umzumbe local municipalities:

Heavy rains have resulted in run-offs to introduce lot of silt into catchment system and raw water with high solid load into purification works which has an impact on plant performance.

A high amount of solids is required to be removed to achieve SANS 241 turbidity level of less than 1 NTU.

UMTHAMVUNA SUPPLY SYSTEM:

Plant production is at full capacity with final turbidity compliance. Plant level is sitting above 50%.
Hanover treated water pump station is feeding Izingolweni and KwaXolo systems.
BP2 tank feeding Port Edward and Sanlameer reservoirs at above 40% and 20% respectively climbing.

NOTE: the planned Umthamvuna plant partial shutdown for overhaul of No.1 low lift pump will now be implemented from Monday, 18 – 30 November 2019.
Week 1 water rotation schedule will be effective from 18th November 2019.

BHOBHOYI SUPPLY SYSTEM:

Plant production has been reduced to 70% to optimise performance and final water quality.
Raw water turbidity from Umzimkhulu abstraction point is above 1500 NTU which had a detrimental effect on treated water quality in meeting SANS 241 standard.

Plant reservoir is currently less than 30% while process teams are busy optimising plant with highly turbid raw water. Raw water pump station is feeding 30% of the pumping flow into the storage dam in the interim.

Umzimkhulu, Marburg, Shelly and Uvongo are receiving minimal flow via gravity, all boosters are off i.e.: Sport n Leisure, Marburg, Northern and Southern Boosters. There is no supply to Seaslopes and Gamalakhe at the moment.

KWAHLONGWA SUPPLY SYSTEM

Plant is offline from Tuesday due high river level and sand build up at the abstraction point. Team is waiting for river level to receed and excavator will start removing sand build up and start up the plant.
