STATEMENT BY UMDONI MUNICIPALITY:
Following the submission of a memorandum of demands three weeks ago by the Farm Abrahams community in Kelso, Acting Mayor, Cllr Sibongile Khathi convened a meeting to address the list of demands as inscribed in the memorandum on Thursday.
The priority issues dealt with were electricity and the appointment of the Land Evaluator. The installation of electricity in this community is in progress as necessary submissions have been made to Eskom for the regularization of Kelso as an Informal Settlement in Eskom’s efforts to avoid illegal connections. The municipality is awaiting a response from Eskom with regards to the matter.
Process by the municipality to purchase this land have commenced. Proper procedures will be followed through with the Department of Human Settlements in the acquisition of land.
A committee of 5 people comprising of community members was established that will liaise with the municipality on the above mentioned issues. The committee will meet on Friday with the Land Evaluator regarding the scope of work and time frames.
Acting Mayor Khathi assured members present that the issues are receiving due attention and are being duly prioritized by the municipality. She also promised to return to the community in three weeks with a comprehensive report.
