STATEMENT BY UGU DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY:
LABORATORY TESTS CONFIRM THAT WATER IS SAFE FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION
Following an outcry from certain communities fed from Bhobhoyi plant, regarding an “unusual salty” taste of the water, Ugu municipality would like to confirm that the water has been tested and is safe for drinking in terms of SANS 241:2015
During the recent high tide, the level of salinity at the abstraction point was higher than usual, but within acceptance standard during production.
The reaction between the traces of Sodium chloride and Chlorine gas is what brings about the unusual taste.
As a Water Services Authority along the coastline, with an abstraction point just 8km north of the ocean, these are natural features inherent to the geographical location
The municipality is beefing up the Planning and Risk management,as the high tide pattern points at September/November annually.
Some areas may not notice the unusual taste, because it depends on how depleted their local reservoirs were and the level of dilution along the line.
We thank all those who reported as such, working together we can do more.
