As for Baker, he was more confused than anything. “I kept waiting for the Big Fish to go on one of his birdie runs, but it never came.”

Sean Baker produced one of the best rounds of his life to win the San Lameer Open/Southern KZN Closed last Saturday.

He started steadily with 75, and then his putter caught fire, seeing him roll in six birdie putts – and a few vital par saves – en route to 67 in the afternoon and a four shot win over his ‘old friend’ and multiple champion Gavin Sole (Southbroom), who had two rounds of 73.

However, it’s been since his move to George, where he is a member at Oubaai , that his game seems to have lifted to a new level.

“Playing those tough courses in the wind seems to have made a difference,” said Sole, who was impressed and pleased to see the quality of golf on display.

As for Baker, he was more confused than anything. “I kept waiting for the Big Fish to go on one of his birdie runs, but it never came.”

It just wasn’t his day, with putts staying out – like the tap-in on the 14th in the morning which bounced off the flagstick.

It went a bit quiet suddenly with the other three in the game silently blaming Covid.

Jason Gilliver (Umdoni Park) had a finish to forget, with a triple and a double to wreck his chances.

He finished third on 76 and 71, five behind the winner.

Junior golfer Kai Hielckert (Port Shepstone) finished fourth, showing signs of what might be to come, with a level par 72 in the afternoon, after a morning 80.

Tied with him was seasoned campaigner Glynn Forman, who has recently joined Southbroom from Durban CC, and was a model of consistency with matching rounds of 76.

The B division of the Skzn Closed was won by Stanley Scrooby (San Lameer) on 71 points, while Elisabeth Bachmann won the B division of the San Lameer Open.
