There will be a paddle out in honour of former South Coast surfer Llewellyn Engelbrecht at Southbroom beach this Saturday (8.30am for 9am).
Formerly from Scottburgh, Engelbrecht was one of the country’s most promising groms and flew the Ugu Surfriders flag high at the 2019 Sea Harvest South African Junior Championships.
He passed away tragically at the age of 11 in Coffee Bay in May.
In view of the fact that it’s unlikely there will be competitions this year where surfers can get together due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Engelbrecht family has felt the need to hold a paddle out in lieu of a funeral and to enable the family to have some closure.
Paddle outs will also be held in Scottburgh, Ethekwini, Coffee Bay and Cape Town. Surfers are asked to bring a flower.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there will be no gatherings at the respective beaches – strictly paddle outs in Engelbrecht’s honour.
Should the conditions be unfavourable, it will be postponed.
