The popularity of the annual South Coast 100 Prayer Run continued to pick up steam despite the Covid-19 pandemic, with this year’s event going virtual at the weekend.

A total of 83 athletes took part in the event, which offered runners and walkers various timed runs and distances from 100 Miles to 5km over a three-day period.

The brainchild of local pastor Daan van Niekerk, the event allows athletes to do distances they’re comfortable with while praying for a designated country. This year’s edition was also an opportunity for participants to pray for frontline workers while running.

The Members in Christ pastor produced his most inspired performance yet. Geared up to pray for the remaining 112 countries, Van Niekerk went above and beyond, ultimately completing an incredible 180km over 30 hours.

“Wow! What a weekend of crazy running, amazing new friendships and earth-moving prayers,” said Van Niekerk.

“Through strength from above, I was able to run and pray for the 112 countries shortly before the end of my 17th hour. This [180km in 30 hours] is the furthest I’ve ever run…I’m incredibly grateful!”

The South Coast Striders stalwart added, “Our three-time defending champion Cornel Metcalf showed her mettle again and completed the 100 Miler in under 24 hours; this after she did the Dusk Till Dawn 100 miler last weekend!

“Marsha Muller, who won the Washie 100 miler last year, also shone. She did an on-the-spot-run in her living room and not even load shedding could stop her. Her smartwatch was sophisticated enough to keep track during the two-hour power outage and she was able to complete her full 30 hours and an unrivalled 190km!

“Several people improved their times and/or distances from last year but for everyone, the main goal was to pray for countries and frontline workers they know.

“As always, the event was well supported by locals and South Coast Striders members, as well as treasured friends from Richards Bay, Hilton, Hillcrest, Queensburgh, Boksburg, Fochville, Escourt, Cape Town, East London, Carltonville and Roodepoort.

“Thank You Lord for Your blessings on us, and thank you everyone who supported in whichever way. It would not have been possible without you.”
