After the first available weekend was blown out, Shelly Beach Ski-Boat Club hosted its first social competition last Sunday.
The weather forecast was great and the turnout was fantastic with 17 club boats entered. The emphasis was on encouraging more ladies and juniors to compete and that’s exactly what happened with most boats having junior and lady anglers on board.
While the water wasn’t at its best, most boats concentrated on Protea Banks where there have been some monster tuna the past few weeks. So many great fish were caught, although the sharks made it interesting with lots of stories of hefty taxes paid.
In the end, it was a day of yellowfin tuna and the scales proved what great fishery there is off of Shelly Beach.
Maansie Beer (pictured) took top honours with a bomb 31.1kg yellowfin on “Bliksem”, Addison Garbade, on “Addi’s Cat”, took top lady with a 9.5kg yellowfin and Owen Barclay stuck to his winning ways in the junior division with a lovely 23.5kg yellowfin on “Devocean”.
There were great fish all-round as the scoresheet shows. Some notable mentions were a lovely 20.5kg kingfish caught by Dave Shiven on “Donsa”, young Kade Owen’s 29.2kg yellowfin caught on “Devocean” and Beer’s solid sailfish that he caught and released. There were several yellowfin over 25kg and it seems that between “Bliksem” and “Devocean” they had the bite worked out.
All-round, it was a fantastic social day of fun angling and was well supported. The club thanks sponsors Mr Clean, The Tacklebox Shelly Beach, Paul from Tightline Fisheries, Richard Moir from Man Size Fishing, John Riley and photographer Justin Klusener.
