Shihans and Senseis affiliated to WKF Ugu Karate Region, Karate KwaZulu-Natal and Karate South Africa (KSA) held another successful tournament at Creston College on Saturday.

Over 100 karateka ranging from five years old to veterans participated in the Ugu Regional Summer Championships and vied for medals as teams competed in Kata, Kumite and Unison.

The stakes were high with karateka eager to impress to qualify for the 2017 Elite Championships (brown and black belts only), earn places in the WKF Ugu karate team (Ugu colours) and stake their claim for Karate KwaZulu-Natal colours.

“The standard of karate is definitely improving through the South Coast dojos working together,” said Sensei Coenie Vrey, chairperson of Ugu Karate Region.

“Dojos from Scottburgh to Margate participated, enabling our young kareteka to experience tournament karate and learn and make friends with other like-minded karate students. The discipline of all students was exemplary.

“Our grateful thanks to Sensei Rodney Govender and Sensei Danric Verster who were chief referee and centre referee respectively for traveling down from Durban and giving their knowledge and support.”

WKF Ugu karateka are now working hard for their next challenge, the 2016 SALGA DSR Games.
