As part of commemorating International Rural Women’s month, the MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Mrs Nomusa Dube-Ncube on Friday visited rural farms as part of giving due recognition to rural women in farming.

MEC Dube Ncube, together with Deputy Mayor, Cllr Sbongile Khathi, visited a farm in Sawoti area in Ward 4 under Cllr Themba Mtambo where they assisted in the planting of seedlings and engaged with the women farmers.

The group of farmers were donated with various farming tools and equipment to the farmers and the beneficiaries of the RASET programme.

Various cooperatives from Umdoni displayed their goods for sale which included craft work, vegetables, chickens and eggs amongst others.

Speaking to farmers at Kenterton Hall, Member of Parliament and Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Small Business, Ms Ruth Bhengu, encouraged more women to get into farming and ensure the development of households and communities.

Echoing her sentiments, MEC Dube-Ncube also expressed how proud she is of the women farmers of Umdoni for the great work they are doing, [saying] “Your courage to start such a business is commendable and this ensures your families do not go to bed hungry.”
