Media statement from Democratic Alliance media  by Makhosazana Mdlalose, MPP

DA KZN Spokesperson on Health:

THE Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal calls on provincial health MEC, Sibongiseni Dhlomo, to launch a full-scale investigation after a man died at Durban’s Prince Mshiyeni hospital allegedly after his medical file was swopped with that of another patient.

The incident took place earlier this month.

According to a media report, the men who share a surname and initials were admitted to the same hospital ward.  Their files were allegedly swopped and the wrong medication and treatment was administered.

One of the men passed away the next morning.

The DA is appalled by this.  We are also alarmed by the fact that the family of the surviving patient were then told that he had died. This is unacceptable and the KZN health department should apologise to them.

The incident also explains why there are so many medical negligence claims against the provincial health department.  KZN health can ill-afford this.

The surviving patient has further accused hospital staff of tampering with evidence after a letter of apology from the doctor has gone missing from his file.

The DA expects the MEC to launch an immediate enquiry into the above allegations and to ensure that swift action is taken against those responsible.  Nursing staff are not dealing with a product on a shelf – they are dealing with people’s lives and families at their most vulnerable.  They cannot afford to make mistakes like this.  The MEC must treat these claims with the gravity they deserve.
