Almost 400 runners on Saturday set the tone for what was another highly enjoyable and successful Sappi Scottburgh MTB and Trail Weekend.

As a cold, windy morning rose, runners were already busy registering for this very exciting trail run, which kicked off the weekend’s festivities that formed the second round of the South Coast Fever MTB and Trail Run Series.

At around 08:30, the 22km runners made their way to the start under the Sappi Arch, followed by the 12km at 08:45 and the 5km at 09:00.

The last portion of the race was on pallets that ran across the beach sand, through the lagoon, up onto a ramp by the kiddies’ pools and straight through to the finish, which made the sprints to the finish exciting to watch.

Nduku Mdakane and Sarah Gray won the 22km runs, Syanda Mkhize and Romy Wenzel won the 12km runs while Roy Newlands and Brigitte von Buddenbrock were first over the line in the 5km runs.

Series organiser Michael Bester from One Way Productions said, “[Race organiser] Flavio [Scarpa] and his team pulled out all the stops to construct an unforgettable route for all these adventurous adrenaline addicts.

“The lifeguards kindly gave ROAG their clubhouse to use and that made the process quick and easy and accessible. There was a great atmosphere in the finish area; the food court was set up and Daily Dose and Smile had a coffee shop going, Doble Foods was pumping some breakfast burgers and Funky Pants was selling some new designs of comfy clothing.

“Race Fuel was also present to iron out any aches and pains, a kids zone run by a local school had face-painting and had kids bouncing on the jumping castles, so with quite a few hundred people walking around eating, drinking coffee, surfing, fishing, watching the whales and of course, waiting for the first arrivals, the beach was alive with excitement.”

The series is sponsored by South Coast Fever, South Coast Tourism, Tiago’s, Sign Master, Hollard Insurance, Hibiscus Coast Insurance Brokers, Powerade and One Way Productions.

The third round of the series, the Ingeli MTB and Fun, takes place at Harding Sports Grounds as part of the Ingeli Show on Sunday, 28 July.
