Ugu Athletics Club hit the ground running as they started 2019 by hosting the Battle of Ramaloo Nandia Challenge on Sunday.

The 10km run and 5km fun run/walk started and finished at Port Shepstone Senior Primary, and was the club’s first official event under KwaZulu-Natal Athletics and Athletics South Africa rules and regulations.

Approximately 160 runners, including several families, enjoyed the respective runs and family-friendly vibe.

While most saw the event as a fun day out, there was prize money on the line.

Mziwenkosi Mjala won the men’s 10km run in 32 minutes and 42 seconds.

Mndiya Zama (33:37) and South Coast Striders runner Brind Chidzungu (34:07) completed the men’s podium, while Morne Classen (1:05.50) won the 10km junior race.

Striders athlete Zandile Dunywa won the women’s 10km run in 51 minutes and 26 seconds.

Two minutes back were runner-up and junior division winner Lelethu Nzimakwe (53:16) and Strider Lou Schoeman (53:35).

Eddie Ramaloo, head of athletics at the club, said the event was a good starting point for the club.

“Everything went really well and there was a nice atmosphere,” he told eHowzit.

“We got good feedback from the runners; they all asked us to hold the event again next year, so they really enjoyed it.”
