Port Shepstone High School is extremely proud of 14 of its senior learners who shone in the annual De Beers English Olympiad.

They managed to garner three gold, five silver, three bronze and three merit awards respectively.

Lethokhuhle Khumalo has been invited to attend the prestigious award’s ceremony in Makhanda (Grahamstown) this year as she placed in the top five in the FAL (First Additional Language) category.

The De Beers English Olympiad is an English competition that draws over 8000 entries each year from around South Africa and its neighbouring countries.

It has grown into a formidable contest where the top three candidates receive substantial monetary prizes, starting from R33 000 for first place.

It inspires critical thinking and creative writing amongst first and second language English speakers, and prompts a deeper appreciation of literature by encouraging a greater understanding of the written word.

The examination was three hours long and all the learners displayed an enormous amount of commitment and determination.

Port Shepstone High School would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Ms. Debbie King on obtaining her Honours Degree in Psychology from Unisa recently.

Ms King is the subject head of the Life Orientation department and a much appreciated school counsellor.

Debbie King.
