South Africa’s Bongmusa Mthembu and Ann Ashworth earned stunning wins in the 93rd edition of the Comrades Marathon from Pietermaritzburg to Durban on Sunday.

Kwazulu-Natal runner Mthembu dominated the men’s race en route to his third victory in the Ultimate Human Race having previously won the down run in 2014 and last year’s up run.

The 34-year-old from Bulwer finished the 90.184km race in a time of 5:26:34. Compatriot Joseph Mphuthi finished second in 5:35:14, while Great Britain’s Steven Way placed third in 5:35:31.

Meanwhile, little-known Ashworth announced herself by upsetting the pre-race favourites to claim her maiden Comrades win.

The Gauteng athlete crossed in a time of 6:10:04 to take not only her first title, but her first top 10 finish in the iconic race.

Fellow South African Gerda Steyn finished second in 6:15:37, with Russia’s Alexandra Morozova taking the final podium spot in 6:20:21.
