Three Suid-Natal Martial Arts Academy members medalled at the Karate South Africa (KSA) National Development, Open and Elite Championships held at the UKZN Old Mutual Sport Hall in Durban at the weekend.
The event consisted of a development division – for white to purple belts of all ages – an open division – for all black and brown belts – and an elite division for past or present South African champions and Proteas.
The tournament served as a KSA ranking system for future international championships such as the Zone Six in South Africa, Youth Cup WKF Championship in Croatia, Africa Games in Congo, Commonwealth Championship in India and the World Karate Championship (Cadet, Junior and Under-21s) in Indonesia later this year.
Local karateka Ockert Schonken and Stefanie Pretorius competed in the development championships, Schonken winning a bronze medal for 12 to 13 year boys kumite and Pretorius bronze for 12 to 13 year girls kata.
Their Suid-Natal Martial Arts Academy teammate Tyler Hogan competed in the open championships and brought home bronze for kata.
Suid-Natal Martial Arts Academy Sensei Coenie Vrey was one of the KwaZulu-Natal coaches.
