It was a very big, busy and memorable weekend for South Coast karateka.

The annual Karate South Africa (KSA) Protea Awards were held in Durban on Friday evening.

Tyler Hogan and Wian de Beer from Suid Natal Martial Arts attended this prestigious awards ceremony where they officially received their Protea awards.

On Saturday and Sunday, the KSA Open and Elite Championships was held in Tongaat.

Four Suid Natal karateka attended what was an extremely tough competition against karateka from across South Africa.

Both Aiden Zandberg and Eirch Meyer competed in the Open Kumite 12-13 year division. Although not medaling, both put up an excellent fight and gained invaluable experience.

De Beer competed in the Elite Division, which is made up of the top six karateka in the country, and obtained an impressive gold medal in the 10-11 year Kumite division.

Hogan also took part in the Elite Division and obtained a bronze medal against tough competition in his Cadet Kata Division.

“I am extremely proud of these four students for all their hard work and dedication to the sport of karate,” said Sensei Coenie Vrey.
