Two karateka from Shito-Ryu South Coast Karate Club were awarded junior brown belts recently.

Rising stars Shakira Coetzer and Gareth Selkon graduated to the junior brown belt ranks and were congratulated by Sensei Elsie Pretorius and Sensei Grant Selkon.

“This grade was achieved through many years’ hard work, dedication and discipline,” said Sensei Pretorius.

“They now both have a long road ahead with a quite a few years of training before they achieve the grade of junior black belt.”

The duo, together with seven other WKF Ugu karate students, represented the WKF Ugu Karate Region at the SA All Styles Development Tournament held in Tongaat, where Shakira won gold for kumite and silver for kata.
