Southcity’s Michaela Rothman and Karissa van Rensburg.

Southcity last Wednesday hosted the first preparatory schools girls touch rugby tournament for Under-13 and Under-11 girls.

The Southcity Under-13 A girls beat Port Edward A 2-0 and Port Edward B 5 -0 and drew their matches with Creston A (1-1) and Izotsha A (0-0).

The Southcity Under-13 B girls won both games against Port Edward B (2-0 and 4-0) and lost to Creston A (0-1) and Port Edward A (0-2).

While touch rugby has been played at Southcity Christian College for several years, this is the first year that touch rugby has been introduced at the preparatory.

The girls have embraced it, with over 30 girls playing in both age groups.

“The best thing for me about this was watching the dads and their daughters on the side cheering the girls on, teaching them to throw a rugby ball, telling them where to run and explaining the rules.

“Many girls have also told me how their dads have bought them their own rugby balls and been teaching them at home. It’s Wonderful,” said Miss Debbie Meyer.
