The solidarity within Southern KwaZulu-Natal Surfing was evident in the fundraising contest hosted by Son Surf School St Michaels.
Twenty-five surfers converged on Uvongo Beach on Saturday and helped raise R1260 for Chanelle Botha, who has been selected to represent South Africa at the 2014 ISA World Junior Championships that will be held in Ecuador from 5-13 April.
As no team funding has been made available, Botha has to raise R36 000 to fund the trip and Son Surf School St Michaels showed their support by hosting a fundraising contest for their students and local surfers.
Asher Beckett won the foamy division after holding off four other surfers in the final. Clair Haskin was the runner-up, Iona Marr was third, Savanna Haupt was fourth and James Rudling finished fifth.
Four boys contested the intermediate final with Josh Bonnema getting the win ahead of runner-up Edwin Oosthuizen, third-placed Jordan Newby and Peter Stroebel in fourth.
Byran Wigmore, one of Botha’s provincial teammates, won the expression session.
Botha said: “I’d like to thank Kyle [Maher] from Sun Surf and all the surfers that took part in the competition on the weekend.
“Sorry I couldn’t be there, I had a South African training camp in Ballito but I’ll be there for the next competition to watch you surf.
“Thank you again for making it possible for me to go to worlds in Ecuador.”
