Ganes Munsami held his nerve to successfully defend his men’s matchplay title at Port Shepstone Country Club at the weekend.
The 16 best players in the previous weekend’s strokeplay club championships went head-to-head for the coveted matchplay crown with Munsami having a target on his back as defending champion.
Title hopefuls had to win four rounds, two on Saturday and two on Sunday, to achieve their goal and as per usual the most consistent and composed player under pressure would be crowned club champion.
That player was Munsami, who clearly excels in the one-on-one matchplay format.
He beat Graham Fabricius in a repeat of last year’s final in the semi-finals, while newly crowned strokeplay club champion Phiwa Mkhoma got past Paul Geoffrey in the other semi-final match-up.
The youth versus experience final was tightly contested, however, the pressure was on Mkhoma heading into the 18th after the experienced Munsami managed to go one-up.
Mkhoma was unable to win the hole and force a play-off, with Munsami holding on to his slender lead to clinch back-to-back strokeplay club championships titles and deny the younger Mkhoma a 2015 club championships double.
