Gregory McKay dethroned Gavin Sole as Southern KwaZulu-Natal Open champion at Margate Country Club on Sunday.
The Mount Edgecombe ace shot back-to-back rounds of 70 to clinch the silverware by one shot over Prince’s Grant’s Tom Lovet, who signed for 70 and 71.
Walter Malevu (142) and Malcolm Mitchell (143) placed third and fourth respectively, while Southbroom’s Sole – who won his third title last year – finished tied fifth with Brendan Adlam on 144 following rounds of 71 and 73.
McKay played under Sole in the South African Inter-Provincial Championship B Division-winning KwaZulu-Natal team in Port Alfred earlier this year but outgunned his provincial captain and the rest of the field at Margate.
It was a troublesome tournament for South Coast golfers, with Sole being the only local to crack the top 10.
Elvis Khawula was the highest-placed Margate golfer in tied 17th on 154, shooting rounds of 75 and 79.
The B Division was contested at Southbroom where Sanele Gugushe edged Emmanuel Mseleku after both finished on 83 points.
