The annual Southbroom Amateur Classic was once again a golfing feast of note.

A field of 160 golfers from across the country descended on Southbroom Golf Club to compete for the trophy over four days recently.

Meyerton Golf Club duo Ig Erasmus and Rudi Venter were in a class of their own in this year’s competition, sponsored by Hibiscus Insurance Brokers, as they took the title by eight on 189 points.

Rob Meydell and Peter van der Walle were the runners-up on their home course, with another Meyerton pair, Jan-Hendrik Marais and Jaco Spamers, counting out Dave Donald and Jan Pienaar from Johannesburg for third place on 179.

Jackal Creek’s Kevin Smith and Rodger Govender finished fifth after counting out David Walker from Johannesburg and Gordon Slabbert from King David Mowbray on 178.

A third Meyerton team finished in the top 10, the duo of Gerhardus Bothma and Francois Swart tangled in a three-way tie with former winners Robbie Botha from Fancourt and Melchior Botha from Stellenbosch and Cyril Botha from Mossel Bay and Wiehan van Niekerk from Stellenbosch on 177.

Eye of Africa’s Ettiene Swan and Jacques Kok rounded off the top 10 on 176.
