The Margate Country Club ladies got their golf week off to a start with Sandi’s Surprise, a reverse waltz threeball alliance.
There must have been “method in her madness” as Sandi Johnston won the day together with team mates Grace Fourie and Anita Scheepers on 82 points. Second place went to Lesley Erasmus, Lexley Lewis and Jane Davies with 81 points.
The Club 100 played an individual point scoring format and Harold Olkers took first place on 33 points, while Ron Scowby came second with 32 points.
The Wobblers played an alliance with two to count and Hanz Beilhartz, Piet Pretorius and Freddie Boshoff secured a good win with 87 points. Nico van Vuuren, Hanz Dallinger and Frank Merrill came second on 84 points, while third place went to Dolf Willemse, Johan Hulshof and Louis Gouws with 81 points. The Arthur Tomlinson Floater went to Eddie Gommersall, Konnie Konrad and Bob Weanie on 68 points.
The Thursday competition was cancelled due to weather conditions. Saturday’s club competition was monthly medal for the A and B Divisions and winning the A Division was Robin Shuttleworth on a 75 nett. Losing the count out and coming second, also on a 75 nett, was Ivan Curlewis.
The B Division was won by Graeme Massam with 68 nett followed by Rob Weyer in second place with a 71 nett. The C Division played and individual points scoring format which was won by Thys Bothma on 34 points. Des Potts had a great bunker shot straight into the hole on the 18th which secured him second place with 31 points. Nearest to the pins on the fourth and 16th were Mike Lee and Tony Beech respectively.
The ladies played a NASSAU format and winning the first nine holes was Lexley Lewis with 21 points, while the second nine holes was won by Anita Scheepers with 19 points. The overall day was won by Beryl Williamson on 36 points.
Thanks to the ladies, a mixed competition was arranged for Sunday, an alliance with two to count and winning the day with 90 points was Des Potts, Arthur Elliot, Shannon Gottlieb and Rina Rito. Ron Scowby, Johann Erasmus, Connie McArthur and Lesley Erasmus came second, on a count out, on 88 points. A late afternoon eightball which was following the mixed competition was asked why they were playing as an eightball. They answered that they weren’t and that they were in fact a 16-ball!
