Sheppie Ladies Festival of Golf a smash hit

Women took centre stage at Port Shepstone Country Club as they competed in the Sheppie Ladies Festival of Golf last week.

Players from all over the province participated in the seventh edition of the popular annual competition, which is played over two days.

The team of Cecelia Verster, Anni Stoppel, Lassity Skea and Charmaine Stone set the tone by winning Day One by four on 90 points.

Day Two belonged to Theresa Walker, Angelique Cameron, Marie Taylor and Tanya du Preez, who also won by four on 85.

In the end, it was the consistency of Verster, Stoppel, Skea and Stone (pictured above) that saw them being crowned overall wnners on 176. Juliana Ziervogel, Annette Thorold, Rita Kinghorn and Mari Robinson were the runners-up on 166 with Ilse Steyn, Gloria Lundie, Dalene Steyn and Jennifer Duncan finishing third on 165.

“It was another successful and highly enjoyable event,” said organiser Jenny Hulley.

“A heartfelt thanks to all the people involved in making it such a success. The ladies who brought tea eats and snacks: Cecelia Verster, Anni Stoppel, Jane Lind, Marisa Stretch, Barbara Rousseau and Ilse Steyn, those that donated prizes: Barbara Rousseau, Liana Klopper, Ilse Steyn, Di Nadauld, Vicki Nott, Debi Stewart, Cilla Lindsay, Anni, Sandi Burger, the Pro Shop and Yzelle Greyling and our amazingly generous sponsors and main sponsors in particular: Ryan Ringo from Umthunzi Hotel, Alan Hall from Hibiscus Insurance Brokers and Eddie Ringo from Halfway Ford.

“Thanks to our club manageress, Carrie Pieterse, and her staff for always being so obliging – the ladies looked fantastic in their traditional outfits – Jesse and his ground staff – the course was in great condition despite the recent heavy rains – and Dean and his catering staff – we had so many compliments about the food.

“Thanks to Linda and Graham in the Pro Shop for all of their assistance and to Joseph, our Caddie Master, who is always ready and willing to help. Thank you to our members who lent us their carts, Ralph van den Berg for painstakingly and meticulously writing up the score board every year, Charles Hulley, Santhos Baskali and Albert dos Santos for doing score cards and to our Marshals Charles, Howard Crouch, Jimmy Parsons and Albert dos Santos for keeping the field moving and the ladies hydrated.

“Thanks to Ian Jones for entertaining us on Monday evening, D.J. Stoppie for compiling our “Out of Africa” CD, Barbara Rousseau for her generosity and for putting together a humungous “potjie” hamper raffle which raised substantial funds for our club, Liana Klopper for her creative skill that knows no bounds, Anni Stoppel for coordinating our hole sponsors and ensuring that good care was taken of them, our captain, Cecelia Verster, all the ladies in our golf section for their assistance, dedication and commitment to making our ladies golf section a happy and healthy one and a special thanks to Sandy Shepherd for helping with registration.”
