The Durban University of Technology showcased it’s fashion design reputation with a clean sweep of the top three in the highly prestigious Vodacom Durban July Young Designer Award presented by Durban Fashion Fair, with Katekani Moreku taking home the first prize while Tiloné Viljoen was crowned winner of the Vodacom Durban July Fashion Challenge presented by Durban Fashion Fair on Saturday.
Designers had to dazzle the judges on the technicality of their outfit, how well they interpreted the theme “The Colour of Magic” when creating a raceday ensemble that effortlessly portrayed the stylish and sophisticated spirit of the Vodacom Durban July.
Moreku beat over a hundred entrants from Technikons and Colleges from around the province of KwaZulu-Natal and he joins a list of prominent Young Designer winners which includes 2014 winner Sadie Bosworth-Smith, who is one of 2017’s Invited Designers.
Moreku won an impressive hamper of prizes, including a mentored trip to the SA Fashion Week.
DUT continued it’s dominance when its students took home the other two spots in the top three with Hlengiwe Queeneth Mdunge and Nazreen Paruk being voted as the next best by the high-powered panel of judges.
The Vodacom Durban July Fashion Challenge presented by Durban Fashion Fair is open to amateur and professional designers from all over the country and the judges whittled the numbers down to a top ten from the initial storyboard submissions, with the prizewinners decided during the recent Vodacom Durban July Fashion Experience Shows.
Taking home the title of Fashion Challenge winner for the 2017 Vodacom Durban July was Tilone Viljoen from Durban.
“I was inspired by the contrast between masculinity and femininity,” Viljoen commented.
“I wanted to challenge how a woman can seen as strong without losing her femininity.”
Durban designers filled the minor placings as well, with Martin Steenkamp and Alice Rash finishing second and third.
