South African rugby was spared further embarrassment when a pitch invader was swiftly dealt with by stadium security during Saturday’s Rugby Championship Test at Kings Park.

While the Springboks were being put to the sword by the All Blacks en route to a 15-57 humiliation, their heaviest-ever defeat to their arch rivals, there was almost a repeat of the infamous moment Springbok fan Piet van Zyl attacked Irish referee David McHugh when the sides last met at the Durban venue in 2002.

A Springbok supporter managed to make his way onto the pitch during the second half but was soon tackled by a slew of security personnel, who promptly muscled the man off the field.
