It is by now well documented that ex-President Nelson Mandela made a huge contribution in uniting the country through his love of sport.   As related in the Clint Eastwood film Invictus,  the country’s winning of the Rugby World Cup in 1995 was a huge success in uniting South Africa. When Madiba appeared on the field after the game wearing the number six jersey of captain Francois Pienaar,  the whole country was wrapped in a warm emotional blanket that has never been equalled again, and which prompted Pienaar to say in an interview on the field that there weren’t only 65 000 people in the packed Ellispark behind the Springboks…….they had the country’s 43-million people behind them.

In 2009 the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage was presented to Mandela, for his work to unite his country through love of sport.

This video clip was produced by celebrated cinematographer Scott Duncan.
