Drag racing in KwaZulu-Natal headed into an exciting new direction at Dezzi South Coast Raceway on Saturday.

Following the disappointing South African Drag Fest, KZN Drag Racing adopted a new streamlined approach, which was implement at the weekend.

The invitational event saw fewer cars in action, with the aim of reducing risks and incidents and ensuring a full day of racing, and patrons were also allowed to bring their own food for the first time.

The fresh approach proved to be a masterstroke and led to blistering action, amongst the highlights being Scott Hoosen setting a new track record of 10.55 seconds in his Golf 7R.

“Myself and Darren Lewis have hosted a few drag events, but I have to say that this event was by far the best event we have ever hosted,” Harry Naidoo from KZN Drag Racing told eHowzit.

“Somehow, this event just felt different from the rest. As we left to the starting line, the spit braai caterers arrived and the jumping castles for the kids. After the first runs, we had some casualties, which was unfortunate. Side shafts and prop shafts were getting destroyed.

“At around 11, most guys had four runs, and times were starting to drop and the head wind as well. We provided Monster energy drinks and water for all drivers as well as catered for our halaal guests and by the end of the day, some drivers had in excess of 14 runs.

“Drag racing in this province is alive and we are competitive judging by the times this weekend. A special shout to Karen Naidoo for being the fastest for the day and flying the flag for women around SA. To Scotty, for taking his Golf 7R to a new track record and to Karthy Naidoo for a brilliant time; a new gearbox and that car is in the nines,” Naidoo added.
