Wave riders from four districts will fight it out for respective titles in 15 divisions at the Hurricane KwaZulu-Natal Surfing Championships at St Michael’s this weekend.
From King Cetshwayo in the North, through ILembe, Ethekwini and to Ugu in the South, in excess of 140 surfers will compete in divisions from Under-10 to Under-18, both girls and boys, for junior titles.
In the senior divisions, the Open Ladies, Masters Ladies, Open Men as well as Masters 35+, Grand Masters 45+ as well as Legends 55+ will be vying for the various prestigious titles. Big prize money is up for grabs in both the Open Men as well as Open Ladies divisions while all other divisions are sponsored or supported with prizes from local businesses.
The action gets underway on Saturday at 7.30am and culminates on Sunday afternoon. “We’re very excited to welcome the surfers to our shores and can’t wait for the competition to start. It promises to be two days of exciting, top-level surfing and we encourage locals to come out and support the Ugu locals” said Claudia Attfield, vice-chairperson of Ugu Surfriders.
“It is a huge endeavour to put an event like this together and without the help of locals and their businesses, this would not be possible.
