The English ‘laid to rest’ at Margate Country Club

Rain hampered competition days again this week at Margate Country Club and the fields were small.

The Club 100 managed to play on Tuesday and winning the competition, played in an individual point scoring format was Ivan Curlewis with 34 points. Richard Whittington came second on 33 points.

The Wobblers played an alliance with two scores to count and was won by Freddie Boshoff, Ernie Janse and Rob Brien with 83 points. Keith Pearson, Wimpie Jordaan and Derek Egerton came second on a count out with 76 points.

Losing the count out and coming third were Konnie Konrad, Ernst Diedrichsen and Billy Diedrichsen, also on 76 points. The Arthur Tomlinson Floater was secured with 61 points by Wayne Minnaar, Andre Henn and Hans Dallinger.

The sun was back for the club competition on Saturday and so to were the golfers. It was played in a betterball stableford format and won by Peter McCarthy and Peter Hunter with 44 points. Johann Erasmus and Leon Olivier secured second place with 43 points on a count out. Third place went to Mike Lee and Rob Weyer, also with 43 points and also on a count out. Nearest the pins at the second and 11th went to Mike Jones and Peter Hunter respectively.

After prize-giving, the English rugby jersey of Mike Lee was laid to rest. The jersey was auctioned off after the Rugby World Cup final and went to Joe Espach who trumped the initial bid by Des Potts of an empty beer bottle, with a final bid of R0,00. The casket will be open and available for viewing in the main foyer of the club – visitors are welcome.
