The third annual Port Edward Bass Classic hosted by the South Coast Bass Association (SCBA) will be held on private farm dams on Saturday.

As the competition adheres to KwaZulu-Natal Bass Federation rules, it’s strictly catch-and-release on artificial lures only.

Previously held over two days, this year’s competition will be contested on Saturday only.

Also new this year is the inclusion of two junior categories, with the former junior division now split into Under-18 and Under-12 age groups.

“We really want to encourage youngsters to get involved in fishing, which is why we’ve changed things up this year,” SCBA chairman Manus Erasmus told eHowz!t.

“We cater for families but at the same time we strive to make anglers aware of fishing with artificial lures and of course, catch-and-release as preservation of bass.”

Erasmus added the fact that anglers are spoilt for choice with 15 private dams is one of the major draw cards of the competition.

“The private farm dams are a big attraction for anglers because these dams are not fished so often. They therefore make for exciting fishing.

“Great interest has been shown in this year’s competition and it’s shaping up to be a great event.”

Provincial rock and surf angler Louis Allison won last year’s Port Edward Bass Classic with a 4.06kg bass, while the inaugural event saw the De Wet twins win the women’s division when they each weighed a bass of the same weight.

First prize this year is a Custom kick boat; the men’s winner will walk away with an electric sneaker motor while the leading Under-18 angler will win a Pisces Predator kick boat.

Top prizes will also be up for grabs in the women’s and Under-12 categories.

Entry fee for the competition is R80.

The captain’s briefing will be held at the Port Edward Marlin Ski-Boat Club on Friday at 6pm.

Fishing is from 5am to 5pm on Saturday.
