Twenty-nine taxi commuters were injured when two taxis collided on the N2 at Wilsons cutting in Izingolweni on Monday afternoon.

Although the exact detail to the cause of the accident is still speculative, both vehicles overturned on impact and their twisted remains came to rest on their sides at the side of the roadway.

Netcare 911 and KZN Emergency Medical Services paramedics arrived at the scene and found the roadway obstructed with accident debris and the twisted frames of the vehicles.

The patients were found at the side of the roadway.

Two babies were critically injured, while the majority of the patients had sustained only minor injuries.

The exact cause of the crash is not known at this stage and is being investigated by the police.

The patients were stabilised at the scene by paramedics before being transported to several health institutions in the area, including Murchison and Port Shepstone hospitals.
