The Ugu District Municipality has approved its 2013/2014 budget of R1039 960 754. The capital budget amount is R374 763 014 and the operational budget R665 197 740. Water and Sanitation delivery will come from the municipal infrastructural grant of R275 304 000. Mayor Ntombifikile Gumede said during the council meeting last Thursday that R263 734 400 had been set aside for water and sanitation infrastructure programmes. An additional R32 820 974 from equitable share would be spent on providing free basic water services. She said tarriff charges had increased because Eskom provided electricity for Ugu to run its water treatment plants, reservoirs and pump stations. Eskom had increased its tarriff by eight per cent. Umgeni water had increased its tarriff by 8.4%, and for this reason Ugu’s water and sanitation tarriffs had been calculated at eight per cent.
