Bodyboarders started their surge for selection in the first Ugu Bodyboarding Association trial of the year at Winklespruit on Sunday.

Wave riders from Port Edward to the Bluff and everywhere in between looked to give themselves the best possible chance of earning their place in the Ugu team for the South African Championships later this year.

They had to do so in testing conditions, with no-one making a more emphatic statement than Dane Klusener.

The 2013 South African men’s champion reminded of his class by winning the pro division ahead of runner-up Rory Fellows-Smith, third-placed Wesley Coetzee and fourth-placed Emile van Vollenhoven

He also finished third in the dropknee division, which saw Fellows-Smith see off Nico Muller for the spoils.

“The event was awesome. I have always enjoyed the atmosphere at UBA events,” Durban-based Klusener told eHowzit.

“The competition is always stiff when these events are held. The guys are giving it their all and it shows out in the water…it’s always a fierce battle.

“I’m quite happy with my results. It puts me on the front foot going into the next trial,” he added.

Also drawing first blood were Reece Hargreaves (men’s), Kegan Lloyd (juniors) and Jason Sequeira (boys).

The next trial will take place on 30 April at either Uvongo or Lucien depending on conditions. The venue will be confirmed closer to the time.
