Ugu karateka clinch medals at SA All Styles Champs

Nine WKF Ugu karateka represented Karate KwaZulu-Natal at the South African All Styles Development Championship held in Tongaat recently.

Provinces from as far as Western Cape, Bloemfontein and Limpopo participated in this white to purple belt competition.

Locals representing the province were Wian de Beer, Shakira Coetzer, Chloe Ellis, Katy van der Westhuizen, Travis Campher, Marnu Koekemoer, Marcel du Toit, Cian Zandberg and Gareth Selkon.

In kata competition on the Friday, Ellis, Coetzer and Van der Westhuizen won silver while Koekemoer claimed bronze.

In kumite competition on the Saturday, Coetzer won gold while Koekemoer, Ellis and Van der Westhuizen bagged bronze.

Shihan Dave Millar, Sensei Coenie Vrey, Sensei Elsie Pretorius and Sensei Grant Selkon were very impressed with the dedication and hard training the students have shown to achieve this success.

WKF Ugu karate region is affiliated to Karate KwaZulu-Natal and Karate South Africa, the only body recognised to award KwaZulu-Natal development, KwaZulu-Natal and South African colours.

All affiliated WKF Ugu karate dojos and students are hard at work training for the annual WKF Ugu region tournament to be held on 28 October.
