The final touches have been made for the 2019 Sappi Scottburgh MTB and Trail Weekend.

With its fine winter weather, Scottburgh and the KZN coastline is an ideal venue for outdoor events at this time of the year, and runners and riders have the opportunity to take in the mid-South Coast hospitality at the 2019 event this weekend.

The addition of the two Funky Pants trail runs to the weekend last year has increased the appeal of the overall event and created a full weekend of sporting attractions and Saturday’s runs will be popular with runners of all abilities.

The mountain biking events have been popular draw cards for riders from all over the province and form part of the Quattro ROAG series and the South Coast Fever Series.

Race organiser Flavio Scarpa is sticking to his winning formulas for the three MTB races but says there might have a surprise or two up his sleeve.

“We are taking the riders through a section that was being harvested last year so that will be something a little different,” Scarpa said.

“Otherwise we are going to keep it the same because I have felt that the route is good and it works, so I don’t see the need to change it!

“I have also had a look at the tide chart and it seems that the tide will be well out so who knows, we might include a wade across the lagoon as well!

“So I think the riders should be prepared to get their shoes wet!”

Athletes will be able to look forward to riding and running across the beach on the boardwalk of CHEP pallets, creating a unique lead into the finish area.

The various routes take riders through some beautiful coastal terrain and Scarpa hopes that they take some time to enjoy their surroundings during their ride.

“There are some beautiful views on the route and there is also a section where the sugar cane hasn’t been harvested and you feel like you are riding through a forest.

“I hope that they haven’t cut the cane by the time we ride this weekend!

“There are beautiful sections through forests as well as some exciting single track so there is definitely something for everyone that comes to ride,” he added.

The mountain biking events include the 45km Sappi Scottburgh MTB Classic, the Wardkiss 28km race as well as the Warkiss 10km Family Fun Ride.

From a trail running perspective there are also three different distances to chose from.

For the more serious runners there is the Funky Pants 22km Trail Run, for the less serious there is a Funky Pants 12km Trail Run/Walk and then for the whole family there is the Funky Pants 5km Family Trail Run/Walk.

The other advantage of having the event over two days is that there is the opportunity for people to do both the trail run on the Saturday and the mountain bike race on the Sunday, in order to make the most of the weekend at the Indian Ocean, with local hotels offering special packages for families keen to take part in races on both days.

Parents will be able to take part in their preferred sporting event knowing that their children are being looked after at the Halfway Toyota Kids Zone.

The event has also arranged a unique lucky draw prize of a flip in a vintage Tiger Moth biplane open to all MTB entrants present at the prize giving.
