The 2020 Ugu District Snooker season has gotten underway with the opening round of Premier League and A League action at Margate Country Club this week.

There are some newcomers to the league, and the one that stands out is the first female player to join. Nellie van Tonder (pictured), a teacher at Port Shepstone High School, last touched a cue when she was just a teen.

As a teenager, she participated in the SA Ladies Pool Championship in 2003. Nellie has now decided to take up snooker because she believes that it is a much more challenging game than the other cue sport games.

She said just as golf requires a lot of discipline, a sound technique and a lot of practice, so too does snooker.

She encourages other women in the Ugu District to take up the sport as there are many women in the country playing snooker at league and national levels.

As an educator, she also encourages youngsters to get involved in snooker as it is a sport that teaches discipline more than anything else.

Together with her husband Hendrik, who has also joined the league, they have already started getting coaching from Ugu District Snooker Association’s coach, Selvin Moodley.

For more information about the league, contact Moodley on 081 592 8145.
