Well-known local photographer/videographer Justin Klusener captured stunning footage of a whale and its calf off Port Shepstone on Friday.

There have been plenty of sardine run highlights this year and while the Greatest Shoal on Earth has been lying low over the past few days, the phenomenon produced another magical moment for the likes of Klusener, who has been closely covering the craze along the South Coast.

“I saw on social media that people had seen a whale close inshore just off the Port Shepstone tidal pool and thought it was in distress,” Klusener told eHowzit.

“However, I know that when Southern Right whales have calves they stay close inshore for protection, and there had been a few sightings of mothers and calves over the last few weeks.

“Luckily, when I got to Sheppie, she was still there just offshore between the lighthouse and tidal pool, close enough to use the drone to get a few photos and the video footage.

“It’s great to see something so spectacular close up.”
