STATEMENT BY LOWER SOUTH COAST SPCA:
Smudge the Yorkie urgently appeals to all fishermen to take animals and wildlife into consideration when fishing on our beautiful beaches.
Local fishermen are reminded of the dangers of dumping their used and unwanted tackle on the beaches.
We are noticing more and more discarded tackle.
There is no excuse for fishermen to carelessly discard line and hooks.
Bins are erected on the beaches; please discard your unwanted tackle safely.
It saves lives and it prevents fishing lines from being knotted around the legs of storks and birds.
Smudge is one of the victims of discarded fishing tackle.
On Sunday we received a call from a lady who needed the help of the SPCA. She went for a walk with her Yorkie on the beach. He swallowed a piece of fish with a hook.
The SPCA immediately assisted the family in need. However, we do not have a much-needed X-ray machine (we pray that one day God will bless our Society and we will be in a position to buy an Xray machine).
Without hesitation, we asked for assistance from a private practice. X rays confirmed that the hook was very deep down the dog’s throat.
Smudge was operated and the hook successfully removed. Please donate towards Smudge’s medical expenses.
Smudge needs your support.
